Special gratitude goes to Dominik and Victoria, my neighours, who are great and cool enough to take part in this little photo-project of mine.
Please note: this is not a composed piece of work - the view you get to see out of my bathroom window is exactly what you see above. Dominik and Victoria were in their flat in the moment the shot had been taken.

comments, favs and certainly critiques are more than just welcome!

PS: the rifle was my idea, :D

It is an image of the photographer in fact but the photographer hasn't titled it as a self-portrait. So it is valid to ask if the intention was a reflection of the self (as in conscious intention since the unconscious ones are inevitable and unavoidable). There is no answer with the image. It could be aspirational; it could just be acting; it could be real. The viewer cannot know.

It is impeccable and extraordinarily clean - - well pressed. Every choice is finished. The color of the suit and shirt against the white on white elements (blue white to blue clothing) all framing within the frame a teal blue frame of the traditionally dressed couple. The image has really spectacular palette choices even if simply accurate to the location. The man of the couple looks as if he is about to go hunting and is dressed for the countryside while the main figure is dressed to kill in the city.

But it all seems manufactured.

Ironically for a picture taken in a mirror, the subject seems more an artifice of theater, a tableaux, than a true reflection. It is this that convinces me, finally, that it is not a self-portrait but a tightly executed social commentary.

Technically as a photograph it is as impeccable as its subject. My favorite compositional and graphic element is the lights in the ceiling as well as catching the motion of buttoning a jacket. A man may not look at himself in a mirror but he will look at his equipment, in this case the business suit.

Thinking about what I would say about this photograph encouraged me to post a photograph that presents my sense of self-portraiture which involves overtly seeing and displaying your self - - to reveal before reflecting. [link] Although this image could be just a late middle age equivalent to all those late adolescent emo pictures that tend to overpopulate the genre here on deviantART.

Clearly this is an image from Chris richly deserving of several critiques. I may use mine as a first draft of a potential journal on self-portraiture.
